What Is Modern (Neo) Japanese Tattooing?
Traditional Japanese tattooing has a long, rich history built on bold outlines, strong contrast, and iconic motifs — koi, cranes, dragons, waves, and flowers like the peony and cherry blossom. Modern, or neo-Japanese, tattooing keeps the techniques and respect for that tradition while opening it up to contemporary color, softer feminine compositions, and personal storytelling.
An East & West Blend
My modern Japanese work blends traditional motifs and structure with the color, movement, and femininity my clients ask for — a classic crane in soft golds and blush tones, or a peony sleeve that keeps bold traditional linework but flows around the body in a custom layout.
What I Focus On
Clean, bold linework and strong shading for pieces that age well; thoughtful use of color; and compositions designed for your body rather than pulled from a flash sheet. Because these pieces are often large, I plan them carefully across sessions so the whole design stays cohesive.
